SureHarvest was founded in 1999 by Dr. Jeff Dlott who believes we can achieve a sustainable agrifood system by measuring and then rewarding growers for producing public benefits like cleaner water and air, job opportunities, and vibrant communities, in addition to food. SureHarvest set out to design the knowledge and technology systems needed to create a ‘sustainability currency’ to value and exchange environmental and social benefits in the agrifood marketplace. Trained as an entomologist at the University of California-Berkeley, Dr. Dlott recognizes the ingenuity of farmers, the value of science and data-driven processes, and the power of information technologies. The inspiration for SureHarvest can be credited to a tech-savvy PCA, innovative winegrape and potato growers, passionate trade association leaders, dedicated agricultural scientists, and smart software engineers. In 2002, SureHarvest, in collaboration with Wisconsin potato growers and their trade association, launched its first Farming Management Information System (MIS) that brought pest, nutrient, irrigation, planting, tillage, and harvest management together in one place. SureHarvest Professional Services grew out of Dr. Dlott’s work with growers, food companies, trade associations, universities, nonprofits and government agencies. After many years of managing agrifood sustainability projects with limited information technology tools, the SureHarvest team released a software-as-service Sustainability MIS in 2006. In 2008, SureHarvest assumed the administrative operations and now provides the certification software for the nonprofit organization Protected Harvest, a leading performance-based sustainability eco-label.
